In this paper, an adaptive controller for a discrete-time system derived from MRAC techniques is designed in which the process to be controlled has states and parameters which are unknown or vary during operation. The Linear quadratic optimization theory is used to determine the state feedback gains of the adaptive controller. A white noise generator is used for parameter identification, and an adaptive observer is constructed for state estimations. The effect of the transient adaptive signals, the effect of variance in the white noise, the effect of the observer's gains, the effect of the weighting matrices, and the effect of adaptive gains are compared. The algorithm and structure is illustrated by computer simulation of discrete single-input, single-output minimum phasor systems and non-minimum phasor systems, and this method may be extended to multivariable systems and to the design of superior and simple structured controllers.
